Pen & Ink – General Sherman

General Sherman – India ink on watercolor paper. brush and fountain pen.

After the Grant Image, a friend asked for an image of Sherman. My first attempt was this:

but having decided to take it seriously, went through every image of Sherman I could find. I rather liked this image as his facial expression has a level of deep disdain. For once I feel like I actually captured the expression well. I’m also oddly pleased with how the chair turned out (of all things.) Also think I did a much better job with the beard and hair. The brush hatching definitely needs work though.
