Serendipitous pen & ink practice

General Gordon Granger

I didn’t actually know this was the Gordon Granger. I had done a search of generic “antique portrait photos” a couple weeks ago and this came up as a generic “Union General”. I was up late on June 19th and figured I would do one last bit of practice before bed.

Just a little bit ago I watched a short video about Juneteenth and this image flashed by. Imagine my surprise to find out that this was the man who rode into Texas to forcefully inform the populace that slavery was actually (well at least lawfully) over.

I still need to work on my beard rendering. I think I did a decent job with the mustache, but the beard I should have also executed with a brush.

Fwiw, the brushed ink is actually black India, but the hatching is done with a pen that has a sepia colored cartridge.
