Working on a couple guitars at the moment. Details to follow, but for the moment I’m starting on the sound hole rosettes.

Step 1 is just to draw out the dimensions and set up the radial symmetry.

Step 2 is to add the cardinal points. I have some leftover layered stock from the renaissance guitar I made a while back. Made of maple and bloodwood for a nice color contrast. These are glued directly to the paper, since that can be pretty easily scraped off when I’m done.

Step 3 is to cut the interstitial pieces, from the same walnut I’m using for the back and sides, and the barrier strips are of holly.

Step 4 is to clean up the inside circle, for which I set up a circle jig and a trim router. The pointy one will get routed around the outside as well, but the more gothic arched one will get a scalloped edge.

As a flourish, I added some violin purfling strips to the edges of the two pieces. I got every other scallop sorted on the gothic one when it got too late. So I’ll pick it up next time with that.
